Speight of the Art in the Big Society
Friday May 27th and Saturday May 28th Moto Services in Stafford M6 Northbound
Billed as an Artistic Extravaganza, Speight of the Art and Moto Services combined together to provide 2 days of creative excitement and entertainment to some 200 inspired children.
Housed in a marquee to deal with the inclement weather, the young participants were the beneficiaries of artistic brilliance coupled with the fabulous and haunting rhythms and dance from both India and Brazil.
Special needs, disabled and able bodied children all from 4 local and regional schools; namely Walton Hall Special Needs from Eccleshall, Regent College Special Needs, St Margaret's Ward School of Performing Arts (Robbie Williams' old school) and Western Coyney School both from Stoke on Trent were royally entertained by UK leading professional artistes from the worlds of motorsport art, landscape art, portraiture, graffiti, felt making, Banghra dance, Latin American dance and even truffle making! Quite an array of talent!
A truly outstanding and successful event enjoyed by both parents and children alike. Even the employees of the Motoservices site entered into the spirit of the occasion by wearing Speight of the Art t shirts throughout the 2 days.
How fortunate we were to enjoy the support of the City of Stoke on Trent and Borough of Newcastle under Lyme councils. The Staffordshire County Council added its weight to the proceedings, as Speight of the Art is now linked to the Cultural Olympiad 2012.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Newcastle under Lyme and the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Stoke on Trent graced us with their presence . Fascinated by the reactions of the children and keen to participate themselves, they overshot by a considerable margin their intended time allocation for their visits. We thank them for their encouragement.
The general public visiting the site and ourselves were treated to the musical talent and skills of St Margaret's Ward's jazz band - another 'Take That' is on its way! Road safety for children with the emphasis on motorcycling was an added attraction and who could fail to be tempted to try their hand at Pottery Painting under the watchful gaze of the ladies from Steelite International - a leading Stoke on Trent pottery company, who generously provided 400 plates for children willing to try their hand.
The razzmatazz of the Extravaganza was powerfully demonstrated to the somewhat bewildered and amazed public by the arrival of the hip swaying sensual rhythms of the Art Brazil and Banghra dancers accompanied by 20 excited Staffordshire champion cheerleaders. The compelling music and its colourful train of supporters in tandem, gyrating smoothly through the central restaurant and cafeteria areas to the enthusiastic applause of diners and passers by alike. What a moment! What memory of joy, happiness and self expression!
A shining example to all of Speight of the Art at its best in the Big Society where it belongs, supporting once again the nation's most prized asset - its children!
Messrs Cameron and Vaizey, please note!
