Prize Your Eyes Pilot Competition
Prize Your Eyes is a pilot art competition to raise the awareness of preventing eye injuries in children, with the children creating a piece of art work which represents either the preciousness of eyes, prizing our eyes or preventing eye injuries.
'Prize Your Eyes Pilot Art Competition' at St Margaret Ward Art School came to a successful closure with 200 fantastic entries including 10 runner up Merit Awards and First, Second and Third Awards.
Professor Peter Shah a senior eye surgeon, who is the Director of Education at the Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and Professor Frieda Sii had instigated the pilot Competition with Speight of the Art.
The 200 entries from children in Year 7 (age 11-12yrs) were absolutely fantastic. Helen Terry, the Head of Art at St Margaret's School organised the Art Workshops within the school for the competition.
The judges included Stoke-on-Trent local Artist Sid Kirkham, Alan and Cheryl Gerrard from the Art Gallery 'Artbay' in Fenton, Oliver Speight and myself National Coordinator Jilly Stubbs.
After a long difficult judging session due to all art work being of a very high standard 10 runners up and 1st, 2nd and 3rd were decided upon.
Professor Peter Shah awarded the Prizes, certificates and trophies with Oliver Speight to the children who created the winning Art work.
The prizes were varied Art Materials and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners had their artwork framed by 'Artbay', (thank you very much for this contribution).
Professor Peter Shah then gave a PowerPoint presentation about how Children's eye injuries occur and how they can be prevented. The specialised knowledge shared with the Children was very interesting and most welcomed and will help towards preventing eye injuries in the future.
A big thank you to the St Margaret Ward Art School, the children, the Staff, Helen Terry and Mr Smith the Headmaster for allowing Speight of the Art use their school for their 'Pilot Prize Your Eyes Competition' to inspire Children further into Art and help reduce eye injuries in Children. Thank you to all involved.
