About Richard

Sep07

Richard Jolley was born in Suffolk, in 1964. After 6 years working in accountancy he decided he wanted to work with children from a psychological standpoint. He undertook a degree in psychology at the University of York, UK (1988-1991).

It is there where his interest in children’s drawings began, studying the development of representational drawing for his undergraduate project. He then completed a PhD in children’s drawing and understanding of emotion in pictures at the University of Birmingham, UK (1991-5).

Lots of fun at the Youth 4 Youth festival!.

Its been a long day at the Youth 4 youth festival in Kingswood!
It was a bit of a slow start, and as we were tucked away in a back room not many people knew we were there. After a quick putting up of some hastily made signs with arrows pointing our way, & one of our crew ( Good old Steve!) going around handing out lots of leaflets and herding up a few people in our direction, a slow trickle of folk started showing interest.

Hopefully there will be several online by the end of the week and you will be able to find these at www.youtube.com/jennys17 I hope they will be of help. If you have any other questions re. the website feel free to contact me at jenny_spiers@yahoo.co.uk and I will get back to you ASAP.

I've not long returned from the second of two cartoon workshops at Groundworks in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. With this group we drew facial expressions, stances, lettering & in the second half of the workshops the kids drew their own characters building in the ideas from earlier. Loads of happy faces so I think all had a nice time :)

Thanks again to Groundworks for making us so welcome, to the ladies from the school for cartooning as well & to the kids for getting stuck in & creating a pile of great cartoons!

Have you been to the Banksy exhibtion in Bristol at the City Museum yet? If not, why? It's FAB!
Sure the queue is GI-NORMOUS, but it was very worth the wait.
I've been a bit of a fan of Banksy's for a few years & have loved living in Bristol & being able to see some of his original street art, along with many other amazing street artists work all over the city, mainly in the Stokes croft area.

12th August Groundworks, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent.

I wanted to say how great the kids were at the cartoon workshop, very enthusiastic & stacks of ideas plus of course great cartoons by them. Thanks also to the staff at Groundworks for making us welcome & the helpers who were pretty good at cartooning as well.

I'm looking forward to the next on the 17th.

Don't forget, if any of the kids want to ask any cartooning questions they can do so through the links above...

Hey! Anybody in the Bristol area want to get involved in a youth festival at Kingswood Sept 5th? I'm in the process of getting a stall & some workshops organized for Speight there. Any artists or showmen/women or entertainers who fancy showcasing their talents & helping us out to raise some money would be ACE! Tell your friends! Thanks.

Sp8 of the Art were invited to join the Mayor of London's Children's Art Day
on 9th July and the London Sp8 of the Art team, staged an event that was the highlight of the day.

Alleyn's School Dulwich very kindly allowed us to use their school campus and their state of the art theatre for the day.
Sp8 of the Art are indebted to their hospitality and for their assistance and support.

We had 3 live interactive workshops, two artists demonstrating their skills
followed by a sensational live art show in the Michael Croft Theatre presented by

Just to let everyone know that even though things appear to have been quiet here in North Yorkshire I have been really busy! The children of Thirsk Community Primary have produced some great art work and plans are afoot for more out of school activities.

Unfortunately our application to the Arts Council for the PAINT (Producing Artists IN Thirsk) project got turned down. So I have been working hard to think about how we can move forward to find more creative opportunities for children.

Breeze on Down To The Brue - Family Art Activities

Jul20

I'm busy preparing for our first event in Burnham on Sea - a family art activity day. A group of four local artists and I will be providing opportunities for local people and tourists to try making dreamcatchers, clay tiles, collage and willow butterflies. This is part of the River Brue Festival which was started last year. Other activities include a sculpture trail with guided walks, mural painting, a 'Draw Burnham' day and a craft fair. The event runs from 1-2 August, the family tent only on the 2nd (in the Apex Park). Its totally FREE!!!
