In mid December, the London sp8 team assembled at The Royal Festival Hall for their first inaurugal meeting. We can now confirm that we have a core creative team of four artists from various backgrounds including TV, painting, sculpture and drama. We have appointed our honorary secretary and treasurer, events and press officer. We have within the team a range of knowledge and skill that will surely benefit the foundation as we set about the work ahead.

Already we have plans for the near future and beyond. The creative team will develop and propose sp8 of the art workshops which can be piloted at London primary and secondary schools before going further afield.

We propose to join forces with The Big Draw, an annual UK event in October which is the flagship of the Campaign for Drawing. Some 1300 events will take place across the UK. The details and venue of the London 2009 Big Draw have yet to be announced.

The first major event on the horizon will be Children’s Art Week between 6th and 12 th July. Mayor Boris Johnston has already given us his support and we will shortly be meeting his cultural team to discuss the detail of sp8 of the art involvement.

We are also discussing a major inner city sp8 of the art, Art Day. Currently we are seeking a venue and a sponsor(s) but plans are already afoot!

Since the December meeting we have met with The Arts Council who are keen to help and advise us and in particular assist us in working along side some of their established innitiatives, not only in London but throughout the UK.

We hope to meet on a regular basis and before long we will publish a newsletter for wider circulation. A huge thanks to all who turned up and gave their free time to make our first meeting a resounding success. Thanks to Isa, Rebecca, Gwenda, Melanie, Jennifer, Louise, Angelique, Katherine and Jaquie. For those who couldn’t make it, we’ll see you next time.

Yours,

Martin
